The Swiss are known for their adherence to excellence, and for having some of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in the world. It’s a place that attracts people from all over the world, to cycle, hike and to climb in its unrivalled landscape. Yes, Switzerland is also known for Lindt chocolate, the best watches in the world, and of course, St. Bernard dogs. However, there’s far more to see and do in this utterly amazing country. It’s a cyclist’s dream on road or trail, with some of the best cycling passes in the world, and with mountain bike trails to beat anywhere else for their accessibility, facilities and the ultimate biking grin factor!

Zurich is a city filled with the history and culture of Switzerland, and yet it has a stylishly modern vibe to it, too. It’s perfectly situated for a trip through Europe and onwards to the Alps – I know, from personal experience, as it’s a favourite for me and my family.

Measuring success through customer focus

Cycle Store Zurich isn’t simply a great bike store; it’s a community of like-minded people, thanks to the focus and drive of Dani, who leads his team with the ethos of giving your best to the customer and allowing them to decide, with the Cycle Store team simply listening and guiding them. Talking with Dani, he outlines that the focus is to help cyclists and those visiting the store, to solve the problems that they have. That can be anything from a range of issues, from bike fitting, which is an important aspect of the store’s service delivery, to finding out what the clothing needs are, from a range of the world’s top brand.

Far too often, as Dani and I discuss during our chat, riders have very little knowledge of bike fitting or shoe fitting before they visit a store such as Cycle Store Zurich. People tend to not know the important measurements that a bike fitting expert will focus on, and it’s a reason why Dani and the team refuse to sell cycling shoes online. All customers wanting shoes, must attend their state-of-the-art store and talk with the store experts. A shoe fitting consultation with Cycle Store Zurich can last for anything between 20 minutes to 40 minutes, measuring and assessing their cycle shoe requirements and needs for the individual rider.

Creating a cycling community in Zurich

As Dani says, “whilst we sell several cycling shoe brands, when comfort is the key requirement, then Lake cycling shoes become the shoe of choice, as nobody else delivers the same range of sizing options for the cyclist. Talking with people and listening to them is key, without pressuring them. We want the Zurich and visiting cyclists to become a member of our community.”  This philosophy is evidenced by the regular club rides that have developed, with between 80 to 100 riders attending each occasion! Riders also benefit from events, in partnership with the leading brands that Dani works with.

At an event last autumn, cycling legend and former Olympic and World Cycling Champion, Paulo Bettini attended an event at the store, also riding out with the club and taking in the spectacular scenery that surrounds Zurich. It’s just one example of how Cycle Store Zurich has become the leading cycling hub for riders in the region, and a key element in helping to grow cycling in the Zurich community, where sport is an important part of the local culture.

From his own cycling perspective, whilst coming from a mountain biking background in the early 1990s, Dani is now a confirmed road cyclist, riding mid-mornings around the Lakeside roads and hills of Zurich. Talking with him, Dani tells me that he “likes the speed and rhythm and harmony on a road bike,” and he feels more free and able to relax when cycling on the roads. Being a fan of Zurich myself, I can see why Dani finds cycling on the local roads, so enjoyable. I’ve already booked my own next visit and will hopefully be joining Dani for a spin when I do return to this city where excellence goes hand and hand with stunning cycling scenery.

In memory of Muriel Furrer

We would like to take the opportunity to pause and to remember 18-year-old Swiss cyclist, Muriel Furrer, who tragically died in September 2024, following a serious accident during the Zurich based, UCI Road Cycling Championships.
